Lashback Magazine

Lashback is a personal project that was inspired out of Makeup from the 1960s. The magazine not only discusses makeup and beauty but the social and cultural shifts that occurred in the United States during that time. This project began as a study into women’s makeup and how it was influenced by social change. As I continued my research, I found the 1960’s to be a pivotal turning point in the cosmetic industry.

The 1960’s was the dawn of the civil rights and women’s empowerment movement. I came to find it’s ripple effects in the most surprising of places, in makeup.

This magazine is all about makeup looks and historical timelines. Due to this there’s an emphasis on close up pictures ranging from color to black and white. I used a clean and dynamic layout but incorporated the whimsy of the sixties in geometric and organic shapes. I also included makeup product photography to give the reader a break from narrative information. It also gives the reader the ability to recreate these looks in a modern way.

In terms of color and branding, I chose a muted blue and peach. I found these colors to be noncompetitive with the makeup looks. These colors also complement across various skin tones.
